Last year’s inaugural event was even better than we could have dreamed (and we dream BIG!) so we are really excited to announce the selection of this year’s four literary passages ~ they represent a range of writing styles and time periods, and we think you will be inspired by ALL of them! The Submission deadline is SEPTEMBER 12, 2016, so start creating NOW! (click here for submission information).

2016 NICE Creativity Events: We’ve already had two fun NICE events this year! You can find videos and photos from them on our Facebook page here:

NICE hosted a two-day Brainstorming Creativity Workshop at Logan Street Sanctuary on  Saturday July 23 (1:00 – 5:00pm) and Sunday July 24 (2:00 – 5:00pm). It was great fun! We discussed this year’s four selected NICE passages (symbolism, imagery, cultural context) and brainstormed some inspired pieces on the spot. You can see videos from our 2-day workshop here ~ Day One Video and Day Two Video.

On Saturday August 20th, NICE hosted an Alice’s “Mad” Tea Party & Creative Discussion at Logan Street Sanctuary.  Thank you to  our vendors,  Pam’s Tea Shoppe and Love’s Hangover Creations and thank you to all who participated! We had a “madly” fun time! Videos available NICE Alice’s Mad Tea Party & Creativity Discussion 2016 and We Play MAD Croquet.

This year, we are thrilled to tell you that we are formally a not-for-profit event! Our “parent” organization, the delightful Logan Street Sanctuary, became a 501(c)(3) in November of 2015. We can now accept tax-deductible donations and annual memberships to help support great events like NICE, The Polk Street Review, concerts featuring the best singer-songwriters, poetry readings, theatrical performances, workshops, classes, and so much more! If you are an artist, musician, writer, performer, teacher, arts patron, or arts lover, we welcome you to ALL of LSS’ events! Click here for support information ~ let’s keep the lights on!

The Story of NICE:

We (Alys Caviness-Gober and Sarah E. Morin) are a couple local writers and creative artists who love the spirit of artistic exchange. We also both love to read great classics, and find ourselves haunted by certain memorable passages. One day over coffee, it occurred to us—let’s combine the two, and host a couple evenings for local artists to share their work.

Thus, the Noblesville Interdisciplinary Creativity Expo (NICE) was born! Our plan is simple: each year, NICE chooses four literary passages and asks YOU to create any kind of art inspired by the selected passages. Submissions are reviewed by the NICE committee, and selected pieces presented by the artists themselves at our annual event.

NOTE: Artists may sell their art work at the two-night event : visual artists may sell their NICE submissions, musicians may sell CDs or T-shirts, authors may sell books. Please do not bring large amounts of merchandise: space is limited.  NICE retains 20% of any art sales.

We created NICE (Noblesville Interdisciplinary Creativity Expo) for 2 reasons:

  1. To breathe new life into literature by encouraging creative artists of ALL media to reinterpret key passages.  How do the classics inspire you?
  2. To provide artists high-school age and up, but of any experience level, a safe and positive place to experiment and share their work. Our expo is not a contest, but rather a place to show and receive encouragement from local creative artists and art fans. There are enough talent shows with buzzers and cutting comments—we’re “NICE” people who want you to grow as a creative artist.

  1. I wish I had heard of this sooner. It sounds fantastic. I hope I can get on an email list for this event in the future. The freshness of this endeavor should captivate many creative minds. Thank you.
